Surely, a lot of writers are readers. But that doesn’t mean that writers can’t utilize the power of audio to learn and grow in their craft. Podcasts are great for on-the-go listening and for getting introduced to an amazing new expert or two in an exciting, intimate way.
We have compiled several podcasts that will help improve your craft, coming at it from a Christian angle. Don’t get us wrong, writing resources that are not from a unique Christian perspective still have immense value–but this list is for those podcasts that specifically create a space for writing as a person of faith. These perspectives can help believers understand how to use their gifts for the Kingdom of God.
Christian Writing Podcasts
The Christian Publishing Show
The Christian Publishing Show is hosted by Thomas Umstattd Jr., who is Vice President of the Christian Writers Institute. He’s kind of a big deal in the Christian writing world. Produced by the Steve Laube Agency, this show interviews expert guests about the craft of writing and, of course, publishing. Thomas also hosts the Novel Marketing Podcast (which is not from an explicitly Christian perspective).
The Pastor Writer Podcast
This is a great podcast for all kinds of writers. Don’t let the title fool you, you don’t have to be a pastor to listen and learn! Chase Replogle discusses the craft and theology of writing and reading by interviewing some great guests. It tends to be geared toward more non-fiction writers, but there have been episodes that focus on fiction.
Story Embers Podcast
In the Story Embers Podcast, several hosts discuss a particular issue with relevance to Christian storytelling. The diversity of hosts is valuable because it gives you several different perspectives. While the podcast is newer, it seems to have a strong start.
The Christian Speculative Fiction Podcast
This podcast of course has a genre-focus: The Christian Speculative Fiction Podcast is (big surprise) for Christian speculative fiction writers. Speculative fiction covers works of science fiction, fantasy, paranormal, superhero, ect. The show discusses the craft of writing, publishing, promotion, and daily life related to this genre.
Kingdom Writers Podcast
Wife and husband team CJ and Shelly Hitz train Christian writers of all genres in sharing their works with the world. Unlike other Christian podcasts, Kingdom Writers has a unique focus on spiritual preparation and prayer for the task of writing. It is sponsored by the Christian Book Academy.
Write from the Deep
Hosted by Karen Ball, with experience as a literary agent, author, and publisher, and Erin Taylor Young, with experience as an author, publisher, and writing coach, the Write from the Deep podcast gives tips of the trade and encouragement. The podcast isn’t overtly Christian, but it’s clear the two hosts are women of faith and approach writing and publishing through this lens.
Hope*writers Podcast
The Hope*writers Podcast helps authors take the next step in their writing life. They deliver practical and technical tips from their own crew and experts to help a writer have success with their writing. Plus, they try to give writers a little hope!
Publish the Story
On Publish the Story, Kevin W. Bounds interviews Christian fiction writers, novelists, and writing pros about creating and publishing stories. The show comes out biweekly.
Christian Indie Writers’ Podcast
Four women host the Christian Indie Writers’ Podcast to inform, encourage, and support Christian indie writers with the publication process. Episodes range from dealing with the how-tos of writing to marketing strategies.
Writing at the Red House
Writing at the Red House is about platform building for writers and speakers, discusses writing, speaking, marketing, social media, and everything in between. The main focus is not religious, but the hosts are Christians and do dedicated episodes to discussing topics relevant to Christian communication.
Home Row: Just Keep Writing
Home Row: Just Keep Writing inspires and educates writers of all stripes in the craft and process of writing. The host, J.A. Medders, is a Ph.D. student in Biblical Spirituality and often interviews professors and scholars on the show. This podcast is good for shaping your theology of writing and giving you practical tips.
Honorable Mentions
The following few podcasts are not really about the craft of Christian writing but they still can help out in a variety of ways. Each description explains why they make it on the Honorable Mentions list.
Creatively Christian
Our podcast Creatively Christian is a superb resource for Christian creatives of all types, especially but not exclusively writers. From interviews with comic book creators to movie directors, the show curates guests that inspire, inform, educate and empower believers to use their gifts for God. There is also an associated membership, the Creatively Christian Club, that is geared toward writers and storytellers.
Fantastical Truth
The Fantastical Truth podcast, sponsored by Lorehaven, is meant for readers and consumers of Christian fantasy, science fiction, and the like. They talk about stories like the Chronicles of Narnia or The Chosen T.V. series, as well as engage the “fantastical” side of Biblical narratives. It has ended up in this category because it is not explicitly for Christian writers, though the discussions might help a writer think through how their stories can shape readers.
Declare Podcast
The Declare Podcast is for female Christian communicators of all types. The podcast explores speaking and influencing through interviewing guests and getting their lives’ stories and wisdom. It’s an Honorable Mention only because not all episodes deal with writing.
